Major Construction Initiatives The District Department of Transportation is a crucial partner in major citywide, multi-agency initiatives to catalyze economic development and social equity particularly on the eastern half of the District of Columbia. The Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) is a broad-based project to improve access to, across, and along the Anacostia riverfront and to improve neighborhood connections to this valuable natural resource. The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is in the midst of a major renovation that will help create a new gateway into South Capitol Street and Southeast.
