| Major Construction Initiatives
The District Department of Transportation is a crucial partner in major citywide, multi-agency initiatives to catalyze economic development and social equity particularly on the eastern half of the District of Columbia. The Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) is a broad-based project to improve access to, across, and along the Anacostia riverfront and to improve neighborhood connections to this valuable natural resource. The Great Streets Initiative targets major boulevards in the city to improve the condition and function of the streets and roadways to promote local business enterprises, improve neighborhood quality of life, and enhance the pedestrian, bicycle, and transit environment overall for sustainable mobility. The New York Avenue Corridor Project is five improvement projects on or adjacent to New York Avenue, NE from the Maryland border to Florida Avenue, NE. The 9th Street Bridge, over New York Avenue, NE, Amtrak & CSXT Rail Facilities, is part of the five projects that consists of the demolition and removal of the existing bridge, the design and construction of a new, replacement bridge, and roadway works on 9th Street, New York Avenue, T Street, and Mount Olivet Road. South Capitol Street is the focus of several interim and long-term improvements that will help restore and revitalize this monumental corridor. Starting April 30, 2009, a two-year rehabilitation of the 14th Street Bridges will begin. The job involves major repairs to the northbound bridge and minor repairs to the southbound bridge (no work will occur on the HOV bridge).
